Tiger Times Magazine May 1980 with a story headed “Rich Rewards for Tigers”.  The Tiger Times has 2 photographs the first is Gerald Betts has the ball at his finger tips and the second is a coaching clinic with attending boys Chris Murray, Kim Gorey and Ric Maple.

The story details how Claremont’s bold bid to concentrate on the lucrative $400,000 Escort Championship in the early part of the season has paid off.  Claremont reached the semi final and received a guaranteed $33,000 and then a team of hard running and determined Tigers ran down a Hawthorn team at VFL Park in their quarter final victory and won another $9,000.  Claremont won two games under lights at VFL Park downing Geelong and Hawthorn astounded Victorian officials.

July 15 is the big game and Claremont could win $36,000 for winning or $20,000 for being runner-up.  Kim Trew was selected in the side and won a colour tv set for being the best player against Hawthorn.
