1987 David O’Connell has been displaying some encouraging signs of improvement for the Claremont team.  A member of one of the most gifted sporting families, O’Connell’s confidence was dented severely at the Adelaide Bi-centennial Carnival.  It has taken the first half of the season for him to find his feet again.  Rated one of the prize recruits of the season when the Eagles snared him from under Geelong’s guard, the Club his father John served with distinction

O’Connell was the key to Claremont’s brilliant start in 1987 until he was injured in a game against West Perth at the WACA.  he played 107 games between 1984 – 1990
