1999, September 13, West Australian, Story and Photo “McKenzie deserves his AFL shot.” Photo of Claremont centreman Phil McKenzie and swan District’s Nathan Smith. Talent scouts concentrate heavily on speedy teenagers and tend to neglect the more seasoned player in the Westar Rules competition. They should consider Claremont’s skillful and hard working centreman Phil McKenzie. McKenzie 21 gave yet another emphatic demonstration of his ability with a commanding performance which helped the Tigers beat swan Districts 19.12 to 8.12. Claremont coach Don Pyke gave McKenzie strong endorsement after the left footer had 22 kicks and 7 effective hand passes.
