1952-Sonny-Maffina-climbed-on-Policeman-to-quell-mob

September 1952 a large mob gathered near the Umpires room after the game finished against East Perth.  East Perth won by 1 point and the crowd was incensed by Umpire Glendenning’s decisions in the last quarter.  Crowds tried to push past police and called for re-inforcements.

The crowd only quietened down when Sonny Maffina climbed on to the shoulder of an officer and asked the crowd to settle down and accept the decisions made.  This they did and left the area.
